Parkhurst has the momentum of a suburb being built before your eyes. The growth area around Stockland and the broader North Rockhampton expansion has opened up estate after estate, and the Bruce Highway frontage keeps the whole area well connected for the trades and the families moving in. On new estate ground, site preparation is everything. When lots are formed, the ground gets cut down in places and filled up in others, and fill that has not been compacted properly will keep settling under load. A slab poured straight onto poorly prepared ground will crack and move no matter how good the concrete is. That is why we put real effort into the base — trimming, compaction, and making sure the slab is engineered and reinforced to suit what is actually beneath it.

Engineered slabs are the standard for new builds for good reason. The slab design, the footing depths and the reinforcement are matched to the soil classification and the loads, which on Central Queensland's reactive soils is the only sensible way to build. We follow the engineering, place the steel correctly and pour clean, so the slab does its job for decades.

Parkhurst work is dominated by new construction and the larger-block lifestyle that comes with it. House slabs lead the way, closely followed by shed slabs and machinery pads — sheds are almost a given on these blocks, and they need a slab that suits everything from cars and boats to genuine workshop and farm use. Then there are the driveways, which out here are often long runs from the road right back to the house, so they have to be set out, jointed and reinforced to handle that distance without cracking up.

Central Queensland ground does not make it easy. Much of the region sits on reactive black soil and clay that swells when it soaks up water and shrinks back hard in the dry, and that movement is the single biggest threat to a slab or driveway out here. On Parkhurst's new estate lots, where natural soil and engineered fill can both be in play, allowing for that movement through proper slab design and reinforcement is non-negotiable.

The weather adds its own demands. The wet season can drop heavy downpours in a hurry, so falls and drainage have to be planned to move that water away from slabs and footings rather than let it pool and undermine. The intense northern sun and heat make curing important — concrete cured properly in CQ heat is far stronger and less prone to surface cracking — and any decorative finish gets sealed to stand up to that UV over time.
