Site Prep, Compaction and Reinforcement
A slab is only as good as what's under it. We start by excavating to the right depth, removing soft or organic material, and bringing the pad up with compacted road-base so the slab has uniform support and won't settle unevenly. On reactive CQ soils that move between the wet and the dry, getting this base right is what keeps a slab flat year after year.
From there we lay a vapour barrier to stop ground moisture wicking up through the slab, set steel mesh or bar reinforcement on chairs at the correct height for proper concrete cover, and pour to the thickness the job calls for. Reinforcement isn't optional on a slab that has to carry load — it controls cracking and ties the slab together so it acts as one piece.

Slab Types: Raft, Waffle and Footings
The right slab type depends on your soil, your load and your engineer. A thickened-edge raft slab is the common choice on many CQ blocks — a flat slab with deeper, reinforced edge beams that spread the load and resist ground movement. A waffle pod slab sits on top of the ground over void formers, which suits certain sites and reduces excavation. For sheds, garages and outbuildings we often pour a slab with thickened edges and internal beams sized to the load.
Footings — strip footings and pad footings — carry walls, posts and point loads down to firmer ground. We pour footings as part of slab and shed jobs, set out accurately so your frame, columns and hold-down bolts land exactly where the plans say they should.
Engineering and Certification for House Slabs
A house slab isn't something you eyeball. It's designed by an engineer to suit your soil classification, the building's load and the site, and it needs to be inspected and certified at the right stages — typically a pre-pour inspection of the steel and formwork before the concrete goes down. We pour strictly to the engineered drawings: the specified slab thickness, beam sizes, mesh and bar, cover and set-downs.
If you're building new or adding an extension, we'll work in with your builder, engineer and certifier so the slab is signed off and your build keeps moving. Shed slabs and many garage slabs are more straightforward, but we still set them out properly and reinforce them to suit the load rather than guessing.
Our Process — From Quote to Clean-Up
A slab is a foundation, so we run it in a strict order and don't skip stages to save time — the steps that happen before the truck arrives are the ones that decide whether your slab stays flat. Here's how a slab job runs with us from the first call to handover.
- → 1. Site visit and measure — we set out the footprint, check access for the truck and pump, assess the ground and any fall across the block, and review the engineer's plans where there are any.
- → 2. Written fixed quote — you get an itemised quote covering excavation, fill and compaction, vapour barrier, steel, the pour and finish, so steel and base aren't a surprise extra.
