Concrete Driveways Built to Last in Rockhampton

A concrete driveway is one of the best-value improvements you can make to a Rockhampton home. Done right, it lifts your kerb appeal, handles the family cars (and the boat or caravan), and shrugs off decades of CQ sun and storms with almost no maintenance. Done wrong, it cracks, pools water and stains — which is exactly why how a driveway is prepared and poured matters far more than the price per square metre.

Rockhampton Concreting Co builds plain, coloured and exposed aggregate driveways across Rockhampton, Gracemere, Yeppoon and the wider Capricorn Coast. Every driveway starts with proper site preparation — the part you never see but the part that decides whether your slab lasts. We excavate to the right depth, compact a solid road-base, set steel mesh reinforcement on chairs, and pour to the correct thickness with control joints in the right places.

Because we quote in writing and finish neat, you know what you're paying before we start and what it'll look like when we're done. No vague verbal numbers, no surprise variations on the day.

What We Build

  • New concrete driveways (plain, coloured & exposed aggregate)
  • Driveway replacements & removals of old cracked slabs
  • Council-compliant crossovers & vehicle layback to the road
  • Reinforced driveways for boats, caravans & heavy vehicles
  • Stencil & stamped decorative driveway finishes
  • Concrete paving, aprons & turning bays
  • Correct falls & drainage so water never pools
  • Expansion & control joints to manage cracking

Driveway Finishes That Suit Your Home

Not every driveway needs to be plain grey. The finish you choose changes the look of the whole front of your home, how it handles the sun, and how slippery it gets when wet. We'll talk you through the options and what suits your block, your budget and the style of your house.

  • Plain broom finish — the most affordable, durable and low-maintenance option, with a light broomed texture for grip.
  • Exposed aggregate — the most popular decorative finish in CQ: tough, non-slip, hides marks, and comes in a huge range of stone blends.
  • Coloured concrete — oxide colours through the mix or as a topping, for warm earthy tones that complement Queensland homes.
  • Stencil & stamped — paver, brick and stone-look patterns at a fraction of the upkeep of real pavers (no weeds in the joints).

Why Driveways Crack — and How We Prevent It

All concrete shrinks slightly as it cures, and the ground beneath it moves with the seasons — especially in Rockhampton's reactive soils through the wet and dry. The job of a good concreter is to control where that movement goes so the slab stays sound and any fine shrinkage cracking happens at the joints, where you won't see it.

We manage this with proper sub-base compaction, the right slab thickness for the load, correctly placed steel reinforcement, and control joints cut at the right spacing and depth. We also build in falls so water runs off rather than sitting on the surface — pooling water is one of the fastest ways to wreck a driveway over time.

Crossovers & Council Approval

The section of driveway between your property boundary and the road — the crossover or vehicle layback — usually needs to meet Rockhampton Regional Council (or Livingstone Shire, for Capricorn Coast properties) standards. We build crossovers to the required specification and can guide you on what approvals your job needs so it passes inspection the first time.

If you're not sure whether your driveway needs council sign-off, just ask when we quote — we deal with it regularly and will point you in the right direction.

Our Process — From Quote to Clean-Up

A driveway is a big surface and a big first impression, so we run every job to the same clear order from the first phone call through to the day we pull off site. Here's exactly how a driveway pour runs with us, so there are no surprises about who's doing what or when.

  • 1. Site visit and measure — we come out, measure the run, check the access for the truck and pump, look at your soil and existing levels, and talk through finishes and falls.
  • 2. Written fixed quote — you get an itemised quote covering excavation, base, steel, the pour, the finish you chose and any crossover work, so the number is locked before we start.
  • 3. Booking and scheduling — we lock in a date and keep an eye on the CQ forecast; a driveway pour needs a dry window, so we'll move a day rather than pour into a storm.
  • 4. Site prep — we excavate to depth, remove soft spots, box up the edges, bring it up with compacted road-base, and set steel mesh on chairs at the right height.
  • 5. Pour day — concrete is placed, screeded to the falls, and worked while we set the control joints in the right spots to manage cracking.
  • 6. Finishing — we apply your chosen finish, whether that's a broom texture, exposed aggregate wash-off, colour or a stencil pattern.
  • 7. Curing and aftercare — we explain how to look after it: keep cars off for around 7 days, heavy loads off until 28 days, and we leave you clear instructions.
  • 8. Final clean-up — we strip the formwork, clean down the edges and gutters, cart off the spoil and old slab, and leave the site tidy.

Professionalism You Can Rely On

A driveway carries real weight every single day, so it isn't a job to cut corners on. We're QBCC licensed and fully insured, and we build every driveway to the relevant Australian Standards for residential concrete — correct thickness, correct steel cover, correct joint spacing. You're dealing with an experienced local crew who pour CQ driveways week in and week out, not a fly-in operator learning on your slab.

  • QBCC licensed and fully insured for residential driveway and crossover work.
  • Built to Australian Standards: right slab thickness, reinforcement and control joints for the load.
  • Quality, correctly batched concrete and steel mesh set on chairs — never thrown on the ground.
  • Tidy and respectful on site: we protect your gardens and paths, keep the gutter clean, and manage wash-out responsibly.
  • Safe work practices around the truck, pump and your family for the whole pour.

Transparent, Fixed-Price Quoting

Driveways are where a lot of people get stung by a cheap verbal number that creeps up once the digger arrives. We don't work that way. Your written quote itemises the base, steel, concrete, finish and any crossover so you can see what you're paying for — and the price we quote is the price you pay. If we hit something genuinely unforeseen underground we stop and talk to you before any cost changes; we never spring a variation on you at the end.

  • Clear, itemised written quotes — no vague per-metre verbals, no hidden costs.
  • Honest advice up front: if resurfacing a sound old slab beats a full replacement for your situation, we'll say so.

Concrete Driveways — Your Questions Answered

How much does a concrete driveway cost in Rockhampton?
It depends on the size, the finish and the site — a plain driveway costs less per square metre than exposed aggregate or coloured concrete, and tricky access or removal of an old slab adds to it. The honest answer is that we give you a written fixed quote after seeing the job, so you know the exact price before any work starts. For ballpark figures, see our driveway cost guide in the Guides section.
How thick should a concrete driveway be?
For standard domestic vehicles, 100mm of reinforced concrete is typical. If you'll be parking a boat, caravan, truck or other heavy vehicle, we'll step it up to 125–150mm with heavier reinforcement. We assess the load and soil and pour to suit — it's built into the quote.
How long before I can drive on my new driveway?
You can usually walk on it the next day, but you should keep vehicles off for around 7 days while it gains strength, and ideally wait the full 28 days before parking anything heavy like a caravan. We'll give you clear instructions on the day so you don't undo the work.
Can you replace my old cracked driveway?
Yes. We remove and dispose of the old slab, re-prepare the base properly, and pour a new driveway in the finish of your choice. In some cases a tired-but-sound driveway can be resurfaced instead of replaced — we'll tell you honestly which option makes sense for yours.
Do you do exposed aggregate driveways?
Absolutely — it's our most-requested decorative finish in Rockhampton and on the Capricorn Coast. Exposed aggregate is durable, non-slip and hides marks well, which makes it ideal for driveways. See our exposed aggregate page for the stone blends available.
How long does it take to pour a driveway?
Most standard residential driveways are a two-to-three day job on site — a day for excavation and setting up the base, steel and formwork, the pour itself, then finishing. Decorative finishes like exposed aggregate or stamped work can add time, and after the pour you're into the curing period. We'll give you a realistic timeline with your written quote so you can plan access to your property.
Is concrete better than pavers or asphalt for a driveway?
For most Rockhampton homes, concrete wins on the long game. Pavers look great but shift, sink and grow weeds in the joints over time, and asphalt softens in CQ heat and needs resealing. A properly poured concrete driveway handles the sun, the loads and the wet season with almost no maintenance for decades. We'll give you an honest comparison for your block rather than just pushing concrete.
Do you seal concrete driveways, and do I need to?
Sealing isn't essential on a plain broom driveway, but it's worth it on decorative finishes like exposed aggregate, coloured or stamped concrete — it deepens the colour, helps resist oil and tyre marks, and makes the surface easier to clean. In CQ's harsh sun a reseal every few years keeps a decorative driveway looking sharp. We'll advise what your finish needs and can seal it as part of the job.
Do I need to be home while you pour the driveway?
Not for the whole job. It helps to be there for the initial site visit and measure so we can talk through finishes, falls and access, and it's handy if you're contactable on pour day in case anything needs a quick decision. Beyond that, our crew works independently and keeps you updated — you don't need to take the week off work.
